First temple to god Xipe Totec discovered in Mexico

Excavations in Mexico recently unearthed the first known temple dedicated to Xipe Totec, a god of the ancient Popoloca people who was associated with fertility and regeneration. The god is often depicted as a skinned human corpse. Michael Smith, a Mesoamerican archaeologist and professor in the School of Human Evolution and Social Change, provided his commentary as an expert in the region.
“The innovation is that they have an altar dedicated to Xipe Totec, not just the presence of the god,” he said.
