Arizona State University Professor Cameron G. Thies was awarded this year’s Ole R. Holsti Distinguished Scholar Award from the International Studies Association (ISA).

According to the ISA West website, “the Ole R. Holsti Distinguished Scholar Award is given annually to a scholar who has significantly influenced the ISA West region. The Ole R. Holsti Distinguished Scholar will have an exceptional record of scholarship in international studies, a distinguished record of teaching and mentorship, as well as service to the International Studies Association West region.”

Thies joined ASU in fall 2013 and served as the director of the School of Politics and Global Studies for the next seven years. He also served as president of the International Studies Association from 2019–20. Thies conducts research in the areas of statebuilding in the developing world, interstate and civil conflict, international trade and international relations theory.

“It is a great honor to receive this distinguished scholar award, named for one of the legends in foreign policy analysis,” Thies said. “I try to live up to the example Ole Holsti set for us all as scholars, teachers and citizens of the discipline. I appreciate the recognition of my efforts that this award entails.”

ASU Associate Professor and President of ISA West Thorin Wright commended Thies for his continual involvement in ISA West and for his efforts in encouraging ASU graduate students to become regularly involved with the association.

“His specific service to the ISA West has been rather remarkable,” Wright said. “I can think of no other region member to better honor the legacy and memory of Ole Holsti than Cameron.”
