Approximately 7,700 students are headed out into the world after graduating from Arizona State University at fall commencement Dec. 11. Here's a look at some of those exceptional grads.

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences recognized psychology graduate Ariana Ruof for academic performance and for being a great example of what you can accomplish when you find your true passion and go all in.

A student of both political science and industrial engineering, Antonio Joan has been utilizing his studies and the many opportunities provided at ASU, such as the Capital Scholars program, to wed his two interests.

ASU engineering grad plans to use solar energy to better the Philippines, her home country

Brigitte Lim took her applied project for the Solar Energy Engineering and Commercialization professional science master's degree program to a global platform that may help make her idea a reality in the Philippines.

ASU applied mathematics doctoral grad found inspiration in high school summer math program

At an early age, Arizona State University graduate Javier Baez liked math but did not think about studying mathematics. Then a high school applied mathematics class set him on the path to his doctorate.

A field trip in middle school led Brittany Nez to look to the sky. Since arriving at ASU, she has continued to reach for the stars, working on a project through the NASA Space Grant and leading ASU’s Next Level Devils.

Chelsea Raulsome originally was interested in nursing, but her mother suggested she look into a social work degree. Once she saw the class list for ASU's program, she knew she had found her path.

Jesus Lopez

First-generation ASU graduate blazes a trail for higher education

Jesús López is the first in his family to earn a college degree. He pursued his bachelor’s in Spanish literature and culture and a minor in criminology and criminal justice, while helping others through Access ASU’s me3 program.

Tierra McDonald

ASU public affairs graduate committed to public service

Tierra McDonald grew up in a family immersed in public service. So it wasn’t a surprise that she chose the same career path, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in public service and public policy from ASU.

ASU Online grad gratified that he could care for his mom while studying

Christian Hansen would visit his mother in the hospital while she was undergoing treatment for cancer. When she rested, he would crawl into the window cubby in her room, pull out his laptop and work on his ASU Online degree. 

Naji Obaid

Veteran translates military service into a career of teaching

Naji Obaid graduates from ASU this December with a master’s degree in teaching English as a second or other language (MTESOL). He plans to continue serving others, as well as bettering himself, through teaching.

Cronkite graduate investigates career in journalism

Jasmine Spearing-Bowen was recently named the 2017 ASU Alumni Association Outstanding Graduate at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, where she has earned a master's degree.
