Wellness, the arts come together to enhance ASU's newly renovated Health Services facility

March 30, 2012

A curated exhibition will be presented at the grand opening of ASU’s Health Services building, April 3, at the Tempe campus. The collaboration is between ASU Health Services, ASU Photographers' Association and the School of Art at the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts.

A curated exhibition of works from the Northlight Gallery photographic art collection will be on display in the newly renovated Wellness Care Wing/Gallery area at ASU Health Services on the Tempe campus. David Emitt Adams, ASU master of fine art candidate in photography, will attend the opening from 8-10 a.m. to discuss his work, "Conversations with History."

Northlight Gallery curator Liz Allen will also be present at the opening to discuss the exhibition. The long-term plan calls for a rotating display of works of photographic art in the health center, designed and created by both current student and alumni artists. The exhibitions will stress the important interaction between wellness, medicine and the arts.

“We are excited and challenged by the opportunity offered by ASU Health Services to consider how photographic arts can enhance this environment,” said Adriene Jenik, ASU professor. “The arts have been associated with healing throughout human history.  A truly healthy space is one that allows for open expression of the full experience of humanity – including sickness, health, pain, transcendence and of course life and death,” Jenik added.

Future collaborative efforts will include ASU Health Service physicians working with the School of Art, Jenik, Allen and photography students on the interaction between Medicine and the Arts.
