Vocal performance candidate wins prestigious award

Jamilyn Manning-White currently is a doctoral vocal performance candidate in the ASU Herberger College School of Music. She recently won the Young Artists Voice Division at the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) 2009 National Conference and took home a $3,000 prize.

The MTNA performance competitions, held March 28 – April 1 in Atlanta, Ga., provided students and teacher educational experiences and recognize exceptionally talented young artists and their teachers in pursuit of musical excellence.

“It was a very positive experience for me as I represented ASU and our wonderful, fabulous and exceptional School of Music,” Manning-White said. “There were many young musicians that had several questions about our school and what we offer, and I have arranged to keep in contact with them.”

Manning-White also was awarded the role of Clorinda in the Glimmerglass Opera production of Cenerentola, which runs July 19 – Aug. 23 in Cooperstown, N.Y.

Manning-White, who also received her Master of Music in Opera Theatre Performance from ASU, graduated summa cum laude from Utah State University with her bachelor’s degree in vocal performance.

More than 100 music faculty artists and scholars work with approximately 800 music majors each year in research, performance and scholarly activities.
