Sun Devils fall at Washington 96-92 in thrilling game

February 05, 2013

National Freshman of the Year candidate Jahii Carson had 32 points on 13-of-19 shooting and ASU shot .638 from the field, but UW outrebounded ASU 36-20 and had 50 points in the paint to hold off the Sun Devils 96-92. UW led by 15 in the second half, but ASU tied the game at 89-89, but the Huskies got key rebounds and buckets down the stretch for the win. ASU falls to 6-3 and is one game behind conference leaders Oregon and Arizona at the halfway mark of the Pac-12 schedule.

ASU fell behind 69-54 with 12:47 left, but came back to tie it at 89 with 1:01 left on a Jonathan Gilling three pointer, part of his career-high 22 points.

Carson, now averaging 24.3 points in the four conference road games, had 22 points in the second half.

"We got crushed inside," said head coach Herb Sendek. "Obviously we gave up 50 points in the paint in a variety of ways: low post, transition, offensive rebounds, cutters off of back screens to name a few of the ways they tallied 50 points in the paint. Certainly the rebounding was very problematic for us. We really got destroyed on the back boards. And we got beat in 50-50 balls. So despite doing a number of good things on offense, it was negated by those kinds of things on defense. Jahii (Carson) was sensational. Jon Gilling made a number of big threes for us. Guys fought back hard and had a chance to win at the end. But again, offensive rebound, putback, and one was the final dagger."
