Sun Devil Motorsport places at 2008 Baja competition, gears up for 2009

March 18, 2009

Students from ASU’s Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering Technology programs competed in the Baja competition in June 2008 did something they have not done before – finished and placed.

The students in the College of Technology and Innovation entered two Baja vehicles – Maroon Team and Gold Team under the Sun Devil Motorsport name– in the SAE International annual Baja competition held in Illinois in 2008. In many of the competitions, the teams placed in the mid-range and in one exercise in the top 20 out of 118 Baja teams participating.

It’s the first year that the teams finished the rock climb exercise with the vehicles. Each year, the teams improve the vehicle’s design and often fabricate a whole new vehicle. Various donors, large and small, are critical to helping the students build the car and travel the long distances to the race.

Students are now preparing for the 2009 competition in Oregon, May 7-10. In addition to building the vehicles, students are seeking donations for the vehicles and their trip to Washington. If you would like to give, please contact Trian Georgeou at trian.georgeou@asu.edu.
