Softball sweeps Washington with 5-4 win

April 30, 2012

Early game offense helped the Arizona State softball team to a 5-4 win against No. 11 Washington (36-14, 7-13 Pac-12) on Sunday. The No. 3 Sun Devils clenched the sweep, its fourth of the season and most by the team in the Clint Myers era.

In the first, ASU (42-5, 14-2 Pac-12) busted open for a 3-0 lead with RBI hits by Annie Lockwood, Haley Steele and Amber Freeman. Lockwood, who went 2-for-3 in the game, is now sixth all-time at ASU in RBI with 164, 17th in doubles (22) and 20th in hits (170).

Washington answered in the bottom of the inning with two runs brought in by Kylee Lahners, diminishing ASU’s lead to 3-2.

Katelyn Boyd helped the Sun Devil offense continue dealing with a double to left center in the second – the score went up 4-2 as Bailey Wigness came home on the play. Her double moves her two closer (52) to the top of the ASU career record held by Kaitlin Cochran’s 54.

A Bethany Kemp infield single in the fifth helped the Arizona State cause, bumping the score up to 5-2 when Haley Steele scored from second.

In the bottom of the sixth Shawna Wright homered to left center for the Huskies, to again chip at ASU’s lead, 5-3. UW scored a late run in the bottom of the seventh via a Wright single, but it was not enough as the Sun Devils held on for a 5-4 victory.

Dallas Escobedo picked up the win; she is now 16-4 this year. Kaitlin Inglesby (18-9) garners the loss after 1.0 innings in the circle.
