School of Public Affairs professor receives lifetime achievement award

Gerald J. Miller, professor of public administration in the School of Public Affairs, is being honored as the recipient of the 2011 Association for Budgeting and Financial Management Aaron Wildavsky Award, a lifetime achievement award for work in budgeting and financial management.

The award, established in 1993, honors professor Wildavsky who was a pioneering scholar in the fields of government budgeting, public policy, and policy analysis. Wildavsky spent the majority of his career at the University of California at Berkeley where he was the founding dean of the Graduate School of Public Policy.  The Association for Budgeting and Financial Management (ABFM) aims to promote the professional development of budgeting and financial management in the public and non-profit sectors.

Miller teaches government budgeting and finance and specializes in financial management issues, especially municipal bonds and other forms of local government debt.  

“I’m gratified the Aaron Wildavsky award committee and Association for Budgeting and Financial Management recognized my work on debt networks. These stable relationships among municipal government financial managers, investment bankers, bond attorneys, and various other parties help predict many municipal bond market outcomes,” says Miller. “I’m leery of the award too. When someone gets a lifetime award, you’re tempting his fate, aren’t you?”
