Saks quoted in ProPublica.org

February 24, 2009

An article posted Feb. 18 by ProPublica.org, an investigative journalism Web site, included remarks from Professor Michael Saks, of the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law, about a new federal report that called the nation's forensic science system "badly fragmented."

In the article, "Government-Funded Study Calls for Overhaul of Nation's Crime Labs," reporter Ben Protess wrote that the public has a flawed perception of forensic science and its reliability. His report detailed findings of a new report by a National Academy of Sciences committee, which will be the subject of an international conference at the College of Law on April 3-4.

"The public has this image, just looking at CSI, that forensic science is perfect," Saks said. "It's just a TV show."

Protess also quoted experts, including federal Judge Harry T. Edwards, a co-chairman of the Academy's forensic science committee, and Peter Neufeld, co-director of the Innocence Project, who will participate in the conference, "Forensic Science for the 21st Century: The National Academy of Sciences Report and Beyond."
