Poet Lois Roma-Deeley to read work in Tempe

Lois Roma-Deeley, who earned her MFA degree in creative writing from Arizona State University, and who won the Samuel T. Coleridge Literary Prize, will read and discuss her work Feb. 16 in the Piper Writers House on the Tempe campus.

The free conversation and reading begins at 6:30 p.m.

Roma-Deeley is the author of three collections of poetry. “High Notes,” her third collection, which was published in 2010, forms the basis for a jazz opera she is writing with composer Christopher Scinto.

Roma-Deeley also holds a doctoral degree in interdisciplinary studies with a primary emphasis inpPoetry from the Union Institute and University. "The Geometry of Configurated Energy: A Poetic Theory" was the title of her doctoral project

The Coleridge Prize is award by Benu Press for "an outstanding work of literature, written by a contemporary author, that fulfills Coleridge's vision of the artist as a reconciling architect of the imagination.”

“Such a work,” the Press states, “invites us to examine our understanding of the world, establishing new meaning in a just future transformed by possibility.”

Critics have called her poems "brilliant," "tough and brave," "poignant," “a vital chorus,” and "soul-satisfying." Literary critic Peter Huggins writes that, in northSight, Roma-Deeley "presents a cast of characters worthy of Dante."

Roma-Deeley has won numerous awards and honors for her poetry, and her work is included in 10 national anthologies.
