Osher Lifelong Learning Institute offers hybrid poetry course

August 16, 2011

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Arizona State University (OLLI at ASU) is now offering a hybrid poetry class starting Aug. 31.

The course, offered at the West Campus, will introduce students ages 50+ to a variety of poets and will help improve their thinking skills and their awareness of living. Students will write poems as well as talk about them. Non-threatening writing prompts and exercises will be provided. However, students are not required to write or submit their work, but they will find that reading poems written by other students will be enjoyable.

The course is being taught by Jim Mitsui, M.A., who teaches contemporary poetry and poetry writing workshops for Southern New Hampshire University Online, and Rio Salado College Online. He is a recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and has had four books of poetry published. He has served as a poetry editor and poetry consultant for Scott Foresman and HarperCollins Publishers. Jim is a long-time instructor in the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at ASU.

β€œIn today's techno world it is easy for creativity to begin to wither. One of the venues which works against this is contemporary poetry. Reading today's leading poets, like Billy Collins, and involvement in the act of writing free verse poetry stimulates the mind, makes one feel more 'alive', generates excitement and satisfaction. Whether you're a beginner or a veteran, you will get something of value from this Hybrid Poetry class,” says Mitsui.

β€œI'm looking forward to what will be my third hybrid poetry session with Jim. His class provides a safe, non-judgmental environment for stepping out of my comfort zone and learning how to creatively express all those scattered thoughts I have bouncing around in my head,” says student Angela Cherevka.

The registration deadline for this course is Aug. 24. For more information or to join OLLI at ASU, call 602.543.6440 or visit lifelonglearning.asu.edu.
