Nurture creativity in arts classes for the community

August 31, 2010

The ASU Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts encourages community members to explore their creativity and enroll in non-credit classes this fall featuring music, dance, and art.

Held only in the fall semester and beginning Sept. 4, The Eleanor A. Robb Children's Art Workshop is taught by art education majors within the ASU School of Art who aspire to be teachers or work in the arts. Creative Expression courses that explore many different mediums are available for children aged 5-9. Drawing/painting, ceramics/sculpture, crafts, photography and printmaking classes are offered for children aged 10-15.

Adults and children ages 5 and up can take dance and creative activity classes within the ASU School of Dance. First-session classes start Sept. 11 and second-session courses begin Oct. 23. Everybody Dances: Creative Dance Classes for All Ages is a movement–based approach designed to help students develop individual creativity, build fitness, confidence and critical thinking. Beginners can start exploring creativity and their physical potential. Everybody Plays: Have Fun with Colors: in just two days, students can learn various textile dyeing and screen-printing techniques. Participants hand-dye several silk scarves using various dyeing methods, and also can print their own T-shirts while playing with colors and unique designs.

Children with a love of music who are in grades 4-12 and play violin, viola, cello, and bass can supplement their instruction through the ASU String Project that begins Oct. 9. Children who do not have access to musical instruction at their schools also are welcome to this nationally recognized program within the ASU School of Music that is directed by Margaret Schmidt, associate professor. String Project students also can enroll in private music instruction that is held in one, 30-minute session per week.

Registration continues through the first day of each class, as space allows. To learn more about class venues, dates, and pricing, visit http://communityschool.asu.edu/fall/ or call 480.965.0050.
