Meet author at Deer Valley Rock Art Center

April 01, 2010

Susan Lowell, this year’s ONEBOOKAZ winner for her bilingual title, "The Three Little Javelinas/Los Tres Pequeños Jabalíes,” will read from her story from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, April 23, at Arizona State University’s Deer Valley Rock Art Center.

The event is free and open to the public, in collaboration with the Arizona State Library Archives and Public Records, sponsor of ONEBOOKAZ.

“The Three Little Javelinas” is the story of wild Southwestern cousins of pigs, not the typical story of the three little pigs. Living in homes built of tumbleweeds and cacti, the first two javelinas are soon running from the hungry coyote, who had hoped to eat them with red chili sauce. And where do they go for shelter? To their wise sister, who made her house with strong adobe bricks, of course!

The Deer Valley Rock Art Center has the largest concentration of Native American petroglyphs in the Phoenix Valley. Visitors hike a quarter-mile trail to view more than 1,500 petroglyphs made between 800 and 5,000 years ago. The museum aims to promote preservation, connection and respect for the site and is are a destination for families to learn about archaeology in their own backyard.

The center is managed by one of the top archaeology programs in the country at Arizona State University and is a Phoenix Point of Pride. It is located at 3711 W. Deer Valley Road, two blocks west of 35th Avenue.
