Mayes named Green Pioneer by ‘Phoenix Business Journal’

November 22, 2011

Kris Mayes, Faculty Director of the Program on Law and Sustainability, was featured in the article, “Standing behind renewable energy,” in the “Green Pioneer” issue of The Phoenix Business Journal.

The Nov. 11 issue featured industry leaders who are committed to the environment and to educating others about sustainable practices.

Mayes said she first learned about solar energy when her dad installed a solar heater in their home in Prescott, Ariz., in the 1970s. As a member and chairman of the Arizona Corporation Commission, Mayes was a co-author of and strong advocate for the state’s Renewable Energy Standard.

“The RES was developed over the course of four years and was built with the idea of hundreds of stakeholders and individuals,” Mayes said. “Many of them urged us to develop a renewable energy standard that had a special focus on solar energy, and that recognized Arizonans are an independent lot who would like to be able to produce their own energy someday, from their own rooftops.”
