Learn about life sciences during SOLS Takes a Hike event

Put on your hiking shoes and join Arizona State University’s School of Life Sciences (SOLS) for its 8th annual SOLS Takes a Hike event from 9 a.m.-noon, April 20. The hike will feature family-friendly adventure of the kind that birds, snakes and dragonflies might also enjoy! The event is free, open to the public and hosted at the Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch in Gilbert. (map)

Guests will spend the morning learning about birds, insects, reptiles, and mammals as scientists from SOLS lend their expertise and guide a series of short, interactive hikes. Folks may explore the geology, plant life, water resources, and urban ecology of this beautiful preserve. The walks wind along portions of 4.5 miles of trails that weave through 110 acres of marshlands and native riparian areas. Over 150 species of birds have been identified in the area.

Meet ASU field biologists, ecologists and geologists who will lead the walks and answer questions about the local wildlife and environment. Various insect displays and live snakes will be on hand, as well as microscopes to view aquatic life from the preserve.

“This is an exciting opportunity for families and students to learn about many species of birds, animals and reptiles,” said Brian Smith, director of the School of Life Sciences. “At SOLS Takes a Hike, folks can experience plant and animal life unique to Arizona, as well as interact with many talented and engaging scientists from our school. We're pleased to offer this meaningful event to our community.”

Guests are encouraged to bring water, a snack, sunscreen, binoculars and a hat, and wear comfortable walking shoes.
