Joe Caldwell to serve as grand marshal at ASU Homecoming

September 18, 2013

Arizona State University is proudly gearing up for the annual Homecoming celebration set to take place Oct. 19. "Sun Devil Homecoming: All that Glitters is Gold” will highlight the spirit, pride and tradition found across all four campuses.

To kick off the weekend, the ASU Alumni Association, in partnership with the Sun Devil Club, will honor 2013 Ring of Honor recipients at 11:30 a.m., Oct. 18, at the Marriott Tempe at The Buttes in Tempe. Past inductees of the Ring of Honor Society include legendary Sun Devils Frank Kush, Ron Pritchard, Mike Haynes and Pat Tillman. Reserve your seat now.

On Oct. 19, the annual parade and block party will begin four hours before the Sun Devils take on Washington in Sun Devil Stadium. The fun will begin at McAllister Avenue and University Drive and continue on University to College Avenue. Kickoff for the game will be determined by the Pac-12.

This year’s grand marshal is ASU alumnus Joe Caldwell. Caldwell, the only Sun Devil to earn a basketball gold medal for his 1964 efforts in Tokyo, played at ASU from 1961-64 and remains the highest-drafted Sun Devil in history, as he was taken with the second pick in the 1964 NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons. He was a third-team All-America pick in 1962-63 by the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

Caldwell was inducted into the Arizona State Hall of Fame as a charter member in 1975 after an incredible career that saw his Sun Devil teams post records of 23-4 in 1961-62, 26-3 in 1962-63 and 16-11 in 1963-64.

"We are very excited to have Joe Caldwell serve as the grand marshall for ASU Homecoming," said coach Herb Sendek. "Joe represented ASU in tremendous fashion and then showed incredible determination and effort to return to school and finish his degree over three decades later. It is a great honor to have such an exemplary Sun Devil lead the way."

ASU will continue to make sustainability a priority. Recycling bins, compost bins and water stations will be on site during the block party and parade. Patrons are also asked to abide by the new tobacco-free initiative that prohibits smoking and tobacco-related products from all four campuses.

Parking lots and structures on the northern part of campus (north of University Drive) are open five hours prior to kickoff for prepaid season ticket parking passes, and cash lots are open three hours before kickoff. View parking information here.
