Dexter Davis named to Bednarik Award watch list

Arizona State University senior defensive end Dexter Davis has been named to the Watch List for the 2009 Chuck Bednarik Award, presented annually to the nation's top defensive player. Davis is one of 55 players on the watch list and one of nine from the Pac-10.

One of ASU's most consistent defenders over the last three seasons, Davis (Phoenix, Ariz.) has started all 38 games of his Sun Devil career. Davis is the only returning player in the nation to record back-to-back double digit sack seasons. He led ASU with 11.0 last year, and has 27.5 in his career. He earned honorable mention All-Pac-10 in 2008, thanks to his 40 tackles, 15.0 for loss and two forced fumbles. Davis has totaled 113 career tackles, 39 for loss and eight forced fumbles.

The Chuck Bednarik Award has been presented since 1995 and is named in honor of Chuck Bednarik, a former University of Pennsylvania and Philadelphia Eagle great. Mr. Bednarik is a member of both the College Football Hall of Fame 69' and the NFL Hall of Fame 67'.

Semifinalists for the Chuck Bednarik Award will be announced on November 4th and three finalists for the award will be announced November 23rd. The winner of the 2009 Chuck Bednarik Award will be announced as part of the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show which will be held on December 10, 2009. The formal presentation of this award will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Harrah's Entertainment Atlantic City on March 5, 2010.
