Dance performance features collection of works
The Transition Project encompasses a combination of complex performance and innovative choreography studies, Feb. 19–21 in the Dance Theatre on the ASU Tempe campus. Undergraduate seniors from the ASU Herberger Institute School of Dance perform under the artistic direction of Claudia Murphey, dance professor. The concert also features choreography from Mary Fitzgerald, School of Dance professor; Jessica Mumford, School of Dance alumna; Angela Rosenkrans, Scottsdale Community College dance program director; Carley Conder, founder and artistic director of CONDER/dance; Aaron McGloin, School of Dance alumnus and director of Aaron McGloin Dance; and Lucio Abruzzi and Alyssa Ramey, current School of Dance seniors.
Alyssa Ramey's work, Reflective Energies, is an integration of visual and performance art. Her stage is a 9-foot-by-12-foot canvas, which becomes more intricately illustrative as she scatters paint throughout the piece. Live music from Bill Swayze, Lorne Mills, and Robin Vining, School of Dance accompanists, complements Ramey’s performance.
Mary Fitzgerald's work, In the Snowfields, transforms the stage into a winter wonderland as soloist Lucio Abruzzi demonstrates the depths of desire. Abruzzi also presents his choreography project, Four Green Events, which through movement, investigates the dynamic spectrum that the color green symbolizes in our society.
Finding a Final Resting Place, Jessica Mumford's most recent work, is a metaphorically driven, technologically inspired solo set on Misty West, School of Dance senior. In the piece, West’s quirky, intellectual performance explores the psychology behind bee swarming.
Senior Jessica Jones tests her newfound womanhood in Unearthed, a solo choreographed by Angela Rosenkrans, which was inspired by the smoky, sensual tones of Julie London’s torch song Cry Me a River. Celine Syslo, School of Dance senior, also investigates the extremes of her womanhood in her tango-inspired solo, Siren, choreographed by Carley Conder.
Conder then delves into the nature and mechanics of memory in, 7 +/- 2, a perplexing solo performed by Nicole Grabianowski, School of Dance student. Aaron McGloin similarly investigates the nature of a mind's imagination through the lens of a child in Far From Home, a solo he set on Jenna Ramey, School of Dance senior.
