Cutting-edge 3-D models advance cancer research

Dr. Timothy Newman, director of the ASU" target="_blank">Center for Biological Physics, has developed the Subcellular Element Model (SEM), which is an algorithm designed to simulate large multicellular systems, with special attention to the 3-D nature of cell deformations and biomechanics. The SEM was originally designed for studying developing embryos to look at the growth of tumors in 3-D. Embryos apply to cancer tumor research because they share the feature of emergent properties arising from a large number of strongly interacting cells." target="_blank">The Center for the Convergence of Physical Science and Cancer Biology at ASU is one of 12 Physical Sciences-Oncology Centers nationwide established by the National Institutes of Health’s National Cancer Institute.

Each center is committed to using insights from the physical sciences and engineering to bring a radical new approach to cancer research with the goal of developing new methods of arresting tumor growth and combating metastasis.
