College of Public Programs to host doctoral research conference

The College of Public Programs will host its first doctoral student research conference on April 29. Conference presenters are evenly distributed among the four Schools in the College of Public Programs: Community Resources and Development, Criminology and Criminal Justice, Public Affairs, and Social Work.

The keynote address will be followed by 20 paper presentations organized in six sessions. The presentations will address a variety of topics including an examination of power within American policing organizations, approaches to community satisfaction, online harassment among college students, and the role of offender citizenship status in Federal sentencing outcomes.

“The Doctoral Student Research Conference will be a great opportunity for doctoral students in the College of Public Programs who are at different stages of their programs to present their scholarly work and to receive critical feedback in a collegial and friendly academic forum,” says Daniel Schugurensky, coordinator of the organizing committee and faculty member at the School of Public Affairs. “This will be an ideal forum for intellectual and social interaction among graduate students and faculty members of our four schools.” 
 

Kelly Campbell Rawlings, a recent College of Public Programs graduate and professor at Northern Arizona University, will be the keynote speaker. 

“It will be valuable for doctoral students to interact with someone who was in their shoes a few years ago and is now a faculty member. Dr. Campbell will not only talk about the content of her research, which is fascinating, but also about her experience completing the Ph.D. thesis, applying for an academic job, and joining another university as a professor,” says Schugurensky.

The best paper presented at the conference will receive the 'Best Conference Paper Award.' This award, sponsored by the Dean’s office, will include $500 to assist the doctoral student to present the paper at another conference.
