Baseball's Riccio Torrez named Pac-10 Player of the Week

May 03, 2010

Arizona State sophomore first baseman Riccio Torrez has been named Pac-10 Player of the Week, the conference announced today. It is the fifth time in 2010 that a Sun Devil has won a weekly award from the conference and the 94th all-time Player of the Week Award for ASU, most in the Pac-10. Torrez joins Zack MacPhee, who has won twice, and Drew Maggi as Devils to win Player of the Week this season. Jake Borup also won Pitcher of the Week honors.

Torrez was the offensive catalyst for ASU's 5-0 week, including a sweep of then fourth-ranked UCLA at Jackie Robinson Stadium in Los Angeles. Torrez (Phoenix, Ariz.) went 13-24 (.542) with eight RBI and eight runs scored. He doubled four times and homered, slugging .833 on the week. He also drew two walks and stole two bases while playing sterling defense at first base. It is the first career Pac-10 Player of the Week award for Torrez.
