May 06, 2009

The No. 4 Arizona State University baseball team completed a two-game sweep of San Diego with a 7-6 victory on Wednesday in front of a crowd of 2,237 at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark. The Sun Devils improve to 35-11 on the season with the win.

Matt Newman went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs to lead the ASU offense. He also started the game on the mound one day after earning a victory out of the bullpen. He went five innings and allowed three earned runs with four strikeouts, but ended up taking a no decision.

Mitchell Lambson got the win, going 2.1 shutout innings out of the bullpen to improve to 7-3 on the season. Seth Blair pitched the ninth to earn his first save of the year.

The Sun Devils got two runs in the bottom of the first, with Drew Maggi scoring on an error and Newman driving in a run with a groundout. San Diego got one back in the second inning on a solo home run by Chris Engell.

Zack MacPhee then drove in a run in the fourth when he reached on a fielder's choice, but the Toreros tied the game with two runs in the fifth.

ASU scored three in the bottom of the fifth on a Carlos Ramirez sacrifice fly, an RBI double by Riccio Torrez and a run-scoring single from Newman. However, San Diego rallied again, scoring three runs in the sixth off Sun Devil reliever Kyle Brule to tie the game at 6-6.

The Devils answered again in the bottom half of the inning, when Maggi scored from third on a wild pitch for what would prove to be the winning run.

San Diego threatened in the seventh, putting runners on second and third with no outs, but Lambson got out of the jam with two strikeouts and a pop out.

The Sun Devils will return to action on Friday, when they begin a three-game series against Winthrop. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark.
