ASU wide receiver Gerell Robinson to join East-West Shrine Game

January 12, 2012

Arizona State University wide receiver Gerell Robinson has accepted an invitation to play in the 87th East-West Shrine Game, which will be held Jan. 21 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. The NFL Network will televise the game, with kickoff taking place at 2 p.m. (MST).

Robinson earned 2011 honorable mention All-Pac-12 honors after he finished the season with 1,397 yards, the second-highest single-season total in school history, and turned in six 100-yard receiving games and seven touchdowns. He set a school record for receiving yards per game with 107.5 and collected the third most catches in a single season by a Sun Devil with 77. He notched a career-high and a MAACO Bowl Las Vegas record with 241 receiving yards, which are the second most ever by a Sun Devil wide receiver, and both his receiving yards and his 13 receptions set an Arizona State bowl record. He also set a Territorial Cup Series record for receiving yards with 199 against Arizona on Nov. 19.

Robinson joins an elite list of football greats, such as John Elway, Tom Brady, Brett Favre, and 62 NFL Hall of Famers, who have played in the East-West Shrine Game along with 52 players currently on active NFL rosters.

"The East-West Shrine Game has always fielded players among college football's best," said East-West Shrine Game Executive Director Harold Richardson. "With all 32 NFL teams represented by GMs, coaches and scouts during game week, our players have the terrific opportunity to showcase their talents and get their first glimpse of life in the NFL ... `Just Like on Sunday.'"

While the teams are divided by East and West, the players come together for the beneficiary of the event, Shriners Hospitals for ChildrenĀ®, an international pediatric specialty health care system.

"We hope our supporters all over the country will come out and enjoy this exciting game," said Douglas E. Maxwell, president and CEO of Shriners Hospitals for Children. "Our health care system depends on the generosity of our supporters, and this game is one of our signature events benefitting Shriners Hospitals for Children."
