ASU leads at John Hayt Invitational

James Byrne shot a 4-under par 68 to lead No.10 Arizona State to a 2-over par 290 in the first round of the John Hayt Invitational in Ponte Vedra, Fla. The Sun Devils jumped out to a six-stroke advantage over second place LSU, who ended the day with an 8-over 298.

The sophomore from Scotland's 68 was the best score of the day, putting him in great position going into the second round of action. The next closest competitor, Zach Byrd of Coastal Carolina, is three strokes behind Byrne after completing a 1-under par 71.

Jesper Kennegard, Knut Borsheim and Stephan Gross each shot a 2-over par 74, creating a logjam in twelfth place. The fifth and final player for ASU was Tristan Bierenbroodspot, who finished tied for 42nd after shooting a 5-over par 77.
