ASU Football: Mean and going green

Green energy from APS to power game

ASU Football, in partnership with Arizona Public Service Co., is going green. The university will use renewable energy to power the game Oct. 17 against the Washington Huskies; kickoff is at 7 p.m.

Sun Devil Stadium will be powered by green energy from APS. ISP Sports and ASU Athletics purchased 125,000 kWh, enough to power Saturday’s game as well as the rest of the season for Sun Devil Football.

“ASU is committed to renewable energy,” says Stephen Ponder, ASU Senior Associate AD for Development. “With the help of APS, we will have the opportunity to influence and educate thousands of students and families attending Saturday’s game.”

Representatives from APS will man a booth at the game and give away free CFL bulbs to one lucky section. Also, throughout the night Sun Devil mascot Sparky will appear on the jumbotron, demonstrating green tips from APS.

The Renewables, an APS team of clean energy super heroes, representing solar, wind, geothermal, hydro and bio-mass energy, will be outside the south entrance to the stadium before the game. Also, volunteers in Sparky’s Fun Zone will hand out Renewables posters and trading cards.

ASU is a leader in adapting sustainable technologies, like renewable energy, to the campus environment. To date, 1.88 MW of solar electricity has been installed on rooftops across their campuses, with more on the way. With several new projects announced, by Dec. 31, the total installed generating capacity of renewable energy for ASU is expected to be 10.486 MW.
