ASU duo rows Atlantic for charity
For the past two months, an ASU duo braved the waves of the Atlantic Ocean to complete a spirited adventure of human endurance. Emily Kohl, ASU Head Women’s Rowing Coach and Sarah Kessens, Biodesign Institute PhD graduate student, were part of a record-setting female foursome who rowed across the Atlantic to support meningitis research.
The international team, which also included Jo Davies (UK) and Tara Remington (New Zealand), completed the trip in 51 days, 16 hours and 31 minutes, besting the previous women’s fours record by 17 days. The nearly 3,000 mile journey began in the Canary Islands and crossed the finish line just after midnight Antigua time on January 23, 2008.
The women named their team “Unfinished Business” after an aborted attempt during the 2005 Woodvale Events Atlantic Rowing Race.
Kessens will return to the Biodesign Institute to continue her intellectual journey toward developing novel therapeutics against HIV in the lab of Biodesign researcher Tsafrir Mor, at the institute's Center for Infectious Diseases and Vaccinology.
