ASU baseball season comes to close

June 22, 2009

The ASU baseball team ended its run with a trip to the 2009 College World Series, where the Sun Devils tied for third after a 4-3 loss against Texas, closing out the season at 51-14 overall.

The June 19 game started with the Sun Devils in front 1-0, followed by a solo home run from Texas to tie the game. ASU infielder Drew Maggi's two-out RBI single in the fourth put ASU back in front. The Longhorns tied the game with a run in the fifth, and the teams remained deadlocked until the ninth.

ASU broke the 2-2 tie in the top of the ninth after hitting a two-out triple to the right field corner. Texas tied the game again in the bottom of the ninth with a solo home run to center and then eliminated the Sun Devils with a walk-off homer to left.

It was the 21st time in school history and the third time in the last five seasons the Sun Devils have gone to the College World Series.

In the opening round of the series, a four-run 10th inning lifted the Sun Devils to a 5-2 win over North Carolina, with pitcher Mitchell Lambson earning the win, going three innings out of the bullpen and allowing three hits and one run while striking out five.

The team then took a hit against Texas, falling 10-6 and faced North Carolina in an elimination game. A grand slam by Kole Calhoun led the team to a 12-5 win over North Carolina and pitted them against Texas once again, where the 4-3 loss then ended their series run.
