University Dialogue Series: 'What is Sexual Identity Subordination?'

The Office of Institutional Inclusion, a unit within the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost of the University, presents an upcoming event “What is Sexual Identity Subordination?” – part of the University Dialogue Series of free events open to the entire ASU community.

Cheshire Calhoun, a professor of philosophy at ASU and faculty head for philosophy, will present at session scheduled for noon to 1:30 p.m., Feb. 12, in the Memorial Union, room 236, on the Tempe campus. Calhoun works primarily in ethics and moral psychology, and her publications include essays on shame, civility, forgiveness, common decency and commitment.

Following the presentation, attendees will engage in dialogue to identify ways of creating a more inclusive and welcoming environment.

The University Dialogue Series is an initiative launched in April 2011 and intended to facilitate campus dialogue and discussion around issues and challenges related to diversity. Participants are expected to gain a better understanding of the topic and learn strategies that can be applied in the workplace or the classroom to advance a more inclusive environment. The ultimate goal of the University Dialogue is to develop a welcoming climate for all individuals and viewpoints.


 Thematic dialogues will be scheduled at different times around the four campuses. The format will comprise of a presentation by one or more speakers, followed by discussion in small break-out groups, and culminating with a reporting out and general discussion.
