TEMPE, Ariz. – For the fifth consecutive year, the Arizona State University athletics department is second in the Pac-12 Conference for most teams recognized by the NCAA for their high 2017-18 Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores.
Â
Eight ASU teams earned APR scores in the top-10 percent, as announced by the NCAA Wednesday. This is the most teams recognized in the top 10 percent for APR in ASU history.
Â
Women's basketball, men's golf, women's golf, gymnastics, men's tennis, women's tennis, volleyball and water polo all reached the top 10 percent. For women's golf and gymnastics, it is their third year in a row earning a top-10 recognition while men's golf earned its fifth consecutive and volleyball earned its sixth consecutive. For men's tennis and water polo, it is their first time being recognized. The Sun Devil women's tennis team has the honor of being in the top 10 percent for all 14 years of the program.
Â
"Sun Devil Athletics seeks championship performance both athletically and academically," Executive Senior Associate Athletic Director and Chief of Staff
Jean Boyd said. "One of our primary academic metrics is the NCAA's Academic Progress Rate. Tallying second in the most teams in the top 10 percent of highest performers nationally in the Pac-12 conference is further evidence of our commitment to winning in the classroom."
For the past 14 years, NCAA APR has been used to measure academic achievement for all Division I sports teams. APR tracks academic progress each semester for each student-athlete on scholarship, accounting for eligibility, retention, and graduation, and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
Â
Scores required to be in the top-10 percent this year ranged from 985 to a perfect 1000 this year. More than 1,300 teams from 321 schools have been recognized.
Multi-year APR's for all Division I sports will be announced by the NCAA on Wednesday, May 8.
