Freshman saxophonist wins first prize in Kappa Kappa Psi competition

Dale Ramirez, Bachelor in Music Education student and freshman saxophonist, received first prize in the concerto competition held by Kappa Kappa Psi. As the winner, he performed as a soloist at the annual Western District Convention to an audience of about 500 musicians and music educators.

"“I played ‘Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Strings’ by Edward Green, written in 2004," Ramirez said. "It features quasi jazz style and many romantic themes."

The annual Kappa Kappa Psi/Tau Beta Sigma Western District Concerto Competition is open to all active and prospective members from the seven states that comprise the Western District. First prize includes reimbursement of registration and travel fees for the Western District Convention, and the opportunity to perform as a soloist. Download Full Image

"“Performing for an audience of hundreds of talented musicians was intimidating but turned out to be one of the most exhilarating musical experiences of my life,”" Ramirez said.

Ramirez was also recently selected as assistant drum major for the Sun Devil Marching Band for 2015–2016. He was chosen as one of four drum majors after a rigorous selection process.
