The ASU Alumni Association recently was recognized by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) in its annual Circle of Excellence awards competition. The association’s initiatives for veterans, including its alumni chapter for vets and creation of the Veteran Stole Ceremony held before each commencement ceremony, won a Gold Award in the Diversity Programs: External Constituencies category.

CASE is one of the largest international associations of education institutions, serving more than 3,670 universities, colleges, schools and related organizations in more than 82 countries. This year, 715 higher-education institutions, independent schools and nonprofits worldwide submitted more than 3,364 entries for consideration in nearly 100 categories as part of the Circle of Excellence awards. Judges gave 366 awards: 118 bronze; 125 silver, 107 gold and 16 grand gold.

Judges praised the Alumni Association for the way in which the veterans programming involved collaboration with other university programs and integrated alumni with the university and the broader community. They also praised the programming for being directed specifically to veterans, a group in higher education that is often underserved, and for the outstanding design of the veterans chapter’s Challenge Coins, a memento celebrating military service to the United States that has been used as a fundraiser for a memorial wall at ASU that will recognize all Sun Devil veterans who have given their lives for their country.
