ASU and Mesa Arts Center partner up for a night of free music: Digital Culture Hybrid Ensemble

November 19, 2013

Mark your calendars on Dec. 7 for an evening of new musical performance works for digital technologies. Students from the Digital and Hybrid Ensembles course in the Digital Culture Program at Arizona State University will present their own original musical compositions using a variety of devices and sounds, such as Xbox Kinects, Nintendo Wiimotes, game controllers, Wacom tablets, iPads and laptops. This event will also feature faculty from the ASU School of Arts, Media + Engineering in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, Digital Culture Capstone students and the Laptop Orchestra of Arizona State (LOrkAS). There will also be live VJ’ing and external projection mapping on the Mesa Arts Center.

Cindy Ornstein, executive director of the Mesa Arts Center, says of the upcoming performance, “In recent years, the work of undergraduate and graduate students in ASU’s School of Arts, Media + Engineering has been showcased at community festivals and events on the Mesa Arts Center campus. The performance of the Digital Culture Hybrid Ensemble on Dec. 7 is a continuation of this exciting and growing collaboration.” Garth Paine, interim director and associate professor in the School of Arts, Media + Engineering, is “delighted to once again be working with the Mesa Arts Center to showcase some of the undergraduate musical performance work from the Digital Culture Program at ASU. Digital culture looks to the future through experimental work with new musical interfaces and approaches to performance, so this concert promises to give a glimpse into exciting developments in musical composition and performance.“ "Laptop Orchestra (LOrkAS) Performance" Photo by Ken Howie Studios Download Full Image

Health innovators to be honored at Founders' Day event

November 19, 2013

The Arizona State University Alumni Association will honor outstanding faculty members and alumni who have contributed to health research and initiatives at its annual Founders’ Day Awards Dinner, slated for 6 p.m., Feb. 20, 2014, at the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa, 2400 E. Missouri Ave., Phoenix.

The award ceremony has been a signature event for the university for decades, and honors individuals who exemplify the spirit of the founders of the Territorial Normal School of Arizona, ASU’s predecessor institution, which received its charter from the Thirteenth Territorial Legislature on March 7, 1885. This year, the event will focus on stories of success from alumni and university supporters who actively are engaged in transforming health. Faculty members engaged in work in the health and wellness fields also will be recognized; from educating health care practitioners to developing new vaccines, ASU is taking a transdisciplinary approach to health solutions.

With a history that dates back to 1964, Founders’ Day attracts attendees that include university administrators, faculty and local business community leaders. Past award recipients have included Phil Mickelson, the Honorable Ruth McGregor, Congressman Ed Pastor, former Tempe Mayor Neil Giuliano, Craig Weatherup, Reggie Jackson, Pat Tillman, Heather Farr, Marty Shultz and the classes of 1956 through 1959 that worked diligently on the campaign to ensure ASU achieved university status.

Tickets to the Founders’ Day event are $130 for Alumni Association members and $175 for nonmembers. Table and corporate sponsorship opportunities are available. For additional information about Founders’ Day or to RSVP, visit http://alumni.asu.edu/events/founders-day
