Volunteer at the dynamic ASU Art Museum

July 07, 2003

TEMPE, Ariz. - The ASU Art Museum's student docent program is seeking volunteers to join its friendly and informal team. Volunteers have opportunities to interact with artists, scholars and museum staff, as well as expand their public speaking skills, broaden their knowledge of art and history, and prepare for future employment opportunities. Student docents gain valuable volunteer experience that can strengthen resumes for any career.

Student docents play vital roles in the operation of the ASU Art Museum, particularly in contact with the public, said curator of education Michelle Dock. They lead tours, assist children with hands-on art activities and help with many other activities and special events.

"The museum asks its docents for a commitment of time, effort and enthusiasm," Dock said. "This is an opportunity for those interested in art to broaden their knowledge and achieve a sense of community through working with the public."

The ASU Art Museum's collections and exhibitions focus on such areas as prints, crafts, contemporary art including new media, works by Latin American and Latino artists, and works by regional artists. The museum provides a valuable resource for schools and families by offering a range of tours and activities.

Those interested in participating in the docent program during the spring semester may attend a student docent orientation program, at 2 p.m. on Feb. 7. The orientation will be held in the ASU Art Museum, located on the southeast corner of Mill Ave and 10th Street, Tempe. Training for docents is provided every spring and fall.

The ASU Art Museum is a division of The Katherine K. Herberger College of Fine Arts. For more information on the student docent program, please stop by or call the ASU Art Museum at (480) 965-2787.
