Free family day returns to ASU Art Museum

May 30, 2002

EMPE, Ariz. - Escape the summer heat and enjoy free family fun when ASU Art Museum's enormously successful annual Family Day returns for a third year of cool summer fun, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, June 29. With dozens of activities for the whole family, this year's event will be held in conjunction with Lindsay Hebberd: Cultural Portraits of India, a photographic exhibition that presents the many different cultures of the Indian subcontinent.

Families will enjoy activities, events and exhibitions in the cool, 68 degree interior and the underground nymphaeum of the ASU Art Museum. Among the many activities scheduled for this year's family day are henna body painting, puppet shows based on traditional Indian folk tales performed by Herberger College's Theatre for Youth, an international costume stage, performances by Indian drummers and dancers, and many hands-on art projects from around the world. An activity area for children in one of the exhibition galleries includes Indian costumes and a mirror for playing dress-ups. The Phoenix Family Museum activity bus will also participate in the event again this year.

Cultural Portraits of India is an extensive exhibition of 70 large photographic prints, including nine five-foot-long panoramas. The images were taken over the course of more than a decade as Canadian-American photographer Hebberd traveled the length and breadth of the world's seventh-largest country. The exhibition fills two galleries at the ASU Art Museum.

The ASU Art Museum is a division of The Katherine K. Herberger College of Fine Arts at Arizona State University. It is located on the southeast corner of Mill Avenue and 10th Street, Tempe. For more information, please call (480) 965-2787 or visit the museum online athttp://asuartmuseum.asu.edu.
