ASU astronaut coaching session brings hopefuls with stars in their eyes

“Frequent travel may be required,” the job description understates.

NASA announced in early December that it’s hiring another round of astronauts. To help Arizona State University students gain an edge in applying for the job, the School of Earth and Space Exploration (SESE) and ASU’s NewSpace Initiative held a coaching session this week for prospective starmen and women.

With a 17-year career in the astronaut corps that included five space shuttle flights and seven space walks — one of which is considered to be the most difficult and dangerous ever conducted — under his belt, Parazynski (pictured above) offered an expert’s views to the 30 students in attendance.

“There’s no secret formula to being selected to be an astronaut,” Parazynski said.

It’s more a matter of being noticed. Do you run ultramarathons and have two doctorates? People who have worked on complex projects as part of a team in remote or extreme environments will have an edge.

“You really have to toot your own horn,” Parazynski said. “What they’re looking for is ‘Would I spend six months in a tin can with this person?’ ”

Competition for one of the world’s most sought-after jobs is intense, to put it mildly. In 2013, more than 6,000 people applied to the program. Only eight were selected. About 10,000 people will apply this year, Parazynski estimated.

Wednesday’s session was about making the first hurdle, not about passing the huge battery of tests that come later. Although the application declares a bachelor's degree in engineering, biological science, physical science, computer science or mathematics is adequate, Parazynski said honestly most astronauts have doctorates, with a few holding master’s degrees.

“I was told ‘Apply early and often,’ ” he said. “If this is something you really want to do in your life, don’t get discouraged.”

He talked about a friend who applied for a decade before being selected and who ended up flying shuttle missions. Applicants who don’t make the cut can reapply. Substantially adding to your resume during the intervening years, such as getting a private pilot’s license or some medical training, will be noticed by NASA administrators.

Future astronauts can expect to spend four to five years in support roles while training to fly. Even if hopefuls graduate from the Astronaut Candidate Program, they still have to learn all of the following: International Space Station systems training, space walk skills training, robotics skills training, Russian language training and aircraft flight readiness training.

Candidates have to have perfect eyesight. They have to fit in the suits. Pay ranges from $66,026 to $144,566.

“I would love to have ASU represented in the next class of astronauts,” Parazynski said.

He reminded students that NASA isn’t the only game in town anymore.

“All of you ought to look very broadly at space,” he said. While NASA will be going to deep space, shuttles to the International Space Station and space tourism flights also will require astronauts. XCOR Space Expeditions requires all employees to fly at least once.

“My hunch is they’ll be looking for SESE grads in the future,” he said, citing the transdisciplinary nature of degrees offered by the school, which is part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Marc Neveu, a postdoctoral researcher with a Ph.D. in astrophysics, attended the session.

“Being an astronaut has always been a dream of mine,” Neveu said. “Just to see the Earth from space … seeing your planet from space would be incredible.”

As a French citizen, Neveu is ineligible to fly for NASA, but there is always the European Space Agency and private space companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin.

It’s an incredible amount of hard work, but it’s worth all the sacrifice, Parazynski said.

“Space walking is the ultimate astronaut experience,” he said. “I miss it.”

ASU engineering faculty couple study biology at cellular level to find better cures

Just over one-quarter of married people with doctorates had a spouse working in science or engineering, according to a 2010 survey by the U.S. National Science Foundation.

The proportion of hires in science that went to couples rose from 3 percent in the 1970s to 13 percent in the 2000s, according to a 2008 Stanford University survey of around 9,000 U.S. researchers.

Samira Kiani and Mohammad Ebrahimkhani are two of Arizona State University’s 2015-2016 class of new faculty. They are both assistant professors in the School of Biological and Health Systems Engineering in the Ira A Fulton Schools of Engineering. They both study biology at the cellular level. And they both fall into the above trends.

They married 10 years ago, and they’d both rather be in the lab than anywhere else.

They met in a student research center when they were each earning their MDs at the prestigious Tehran (Iran) University of Medical Sciences.

“We were working on a project, and we started to know each other at the same time we were doing science,” Ebrahimkhani said.

Working together has always been an advantage, Kiani said.

“We started working together since the days we were at med school and planned our pathway such that the works complement each other,” she said. “In general, I can confidently say that many times working together created a positive effect in our careers.”

They came to ASU from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where they landed after stints at institutions in London; Rochester, New York; and Seattle.

Ebrahimkhani’s research focuses on understanding the principles of tissue repair and organ regeneration. He combines synthetic biology and human stem cells to engineer novel multicellular systems and personalized human tissue models.

He studies the liver because it’s an organ with unique regenerative properties. If we understand how it works and what stops it from regenerating, he said, that knowledge can be applied to other organs, leading to much more effective cures in the future.

Kiani’s focus is on developing next-generation gene therapies. She works on new biological systems that can behave differently and produce different behaviors for medical therapies or different types of technologies needed for human health and human physiology. Her program of research will be for developing tools to fight pancreatic cancer.

As postdoctoral researchers at MIT, they combined the disciplines of biology and engineering to tackle questions from a different angle. In the end, ASU’s transdisciplinary approach to knowledge attracted them to Arizona.

“We could find this synergy very uniquely here,” Ebrahimkhani said.

Both will teach as well as conduct research at ASU.

Kiani will work closely in collaboration with the Mayo Clinic and the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen). The Valley’s growing biotech industry was a draw for her. “It’s very attractive,” she said.

The couple also had a warm welcome when they visited the Tempe campus and interviewed.

“We found the faculty and department here very friendly,” Kiani said.

Finding ambitious, motivated students among ASU’s enormous student population to work with them was another attraction.

“The student body was also something that we were thinking about,” Ebrahimkhani said.

They moved to Scottsdale in November to find a place to live and get settled. Ebrahimkhani immediately began writing for grants. They sampled the Persian Room restaurant in Scottsdale. (“Much better than Boston,” Ebrahimkhani said.)

He paints, so he is looking forward to exploring Scottsdale galleries. Kiani is looking forward to missing New England winters. “Last winter was something else,” she said.

Most of all, they are looking forward to work.

“Being scientists, our life is our job, so we spend most of our time in the lab,” Kiani said.
